Other People, Other Times

A simple story of a simple woman in a complicated situation.

Mary Nell

Mary Nell left home at age 16 in 1892 to work at the Hotel General Forest in Rome, GA, three years before Annie was even born. She met gentlemen and ladies who lived elegant lives so different from the ways she knew. Mary Nell lived in small room at the top of the hotel and ate three meals a day in the employee’s basement. She had grown plump and independent and proud of her figure molded by corsets. She was the fortunate one.
