Grandmother Curry's Old Fashioned Tea Cakes
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/3 cup shortening
1/4 cup milk
vanilla flavoring
Sift self-rising in a bowl and mix like a biscuit. This is the only cookie recipe I remember Mother making when I was growing up. I never did like these cookies and have never made them. She would have flour in a bowl, make a hole in the middle, put the above ingredients in and mix it together with her fingers. She would roll them out just like a biscuit, cut in squares with a knife. She kept them on a plate, covered with a dry dish towel and served them with her home-canned peaches for our dessert. --Evelyn Brooks
